Director Laura Bialis and producers Nancy Spielberg and Roberta Grossman take us on a journey through the various chapters in the life of photographer Roman Vishniac. He was difficult, flamboyant, and brilliant. Photographer and scientist Roman Vishniac captured iconic images of Jewish life – from the cafes of pre-war Berlin to the shtetls of Eastern Europe — all before fleeing Nazi Germany to reinvent himself in America. His daughter Mara reconstructs his dramatic life, complicated relationships, and breathtaking legacy.
WHY WE LIKE THIS FILM: Most people who know the name Roman Vishniac associate it with his seminal photobook ”A Vanished World” which captured the life of Eastern European Jews right before WWII. But others in the scientific community know Vishniac as a pioneer in the fields of photomicroscopy and time-lapse photography. He was also a larger than life personality. This film presents his incredible life story, with all its chapters in an enaging manner We will show an AJFF interview with director Laura Bialis after the movie.
