Synopsis
A star-studded roster of interviewees, including Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg, Norman Lear, Quincy Jones, and Billy Crystal, pay tribute to the legendary dancer, singer, impressionist, and actor Sammy Davis, Jr. Dazzling audiences since he was a child, Harlem-born Davis was an entertainer of jaw-dropping artistry and unparalleled charisma. Entering showbusiness at a time of racial tension and social upheaval, Davis found himself frequently courting controversy. He performed alongside Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra as a member of the Rat Pack, and, invited by President Nixon, he was the first African-American to sleep at the White House. Yet, as a result he was labeled by some as a sellout to his race. Davis converted to Judaism in 1954 and remained as devoted to Judaism as he was to entertainment throughout his life. The film includes never-before-seen photographs plus excerpts from his performances, exploring the life and art of an entertainer who saw the major flashpoints of American society from the Depression through the 1980s.
